Early morning call, followed by breakfast in the hotel, followed by an attempt to recover the luggage which didn't turn up last night as promised by BA staff. Eventually we are informed that the cases have been located and will be delivered today sometime.
"Don't take your car into Boston". This advice had been given out by everyone. The advice is drive to underground station, park there and take the train in. Alewife is the nearest and there is a massive car park by the station - I wonder why.
We get to the starting point of our sightseeing day, the Visitor Centre at the corner of Boston Common, at 9.50am only about an hour later than we had intended.
For part one we follow the "Freedom Trail":
Lunch happened somewhere around here
It's a mammoth walk to Bunker Hill, so we decide it isn't worth the effort and take the Green Line underground to go to the Prudential Building to pick up the Duck Tour around the main land sights of Boston then a Charles River view.
Land AND water I hear you exclaim. Yes, I reply. The Duck tour is made in ex-WWII amphibious vehicles (code-name DUCW) fitted with PA system and seats. Having driven round the streets the vehicle drives down a ramp into the river - weird.
Duck tour over, we have a short visit to Trinity Church and with time getting on we decide to go up the John Hancock Tower observation deck to look at the bits of Boston we've missed - from multiple hundreds of feet up on the 60th floor.
The views are great, but the picture taking opportunities are not. There are glass windows and a barrier three-feet from them resulting in serious reflections of everything behind you - shame, really.
We stayed up there until the sun set and the city lights came on, and then headed back to the hotel, stopping only to eat something en route.
Arrive back at the hotel at 8.45 to find that only one suitcase has arrived which was left unlocked, one side open and clothes hanging out and a broken combination lock. There was an accompanying message that only one case was ever delivered to the courier delivery service. Another half hour spent on the phone culminating in "we'll just check and call back" - which they didn't.
